Description

Cacao swollen shoot virus (CSSV, specifically Badnavirus alphainflatheobromae) is a destructive plant pathogen that severely affects the global cocoa industry. As a member of the Caulimoviridae family, this virus integrates into the host plant's genome, making systemic infection extremely difficult to eliminate once it has established in a plantation.

The primary host for this virus is the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao). The infection can affect the plant at any growth stage, leading to significant physiological stress. While the virus is most prevalent in West Africa, it represents a global phytosanitary threat that requires stringent monitoring of international exchange of germplasm to prevent spread to new regions.

Symptoms of the infection include leaf chlorosis, characterized by red or yellow banding patterns along the leaf veins. A diagnostic feature of the disease is the swelling of stems, branches, and roots, which can cause cracking of the bark and stunted overall growth. Infected trees show a marked decline in bean yield and quality, eventually becoming unproductive.

The virus is primarily transmitted by mealybugs (family Pseudococcidae), which act as vectors. The spread is facilitated by high-density planting and tropical environmental conditions that support large populations of these insects. The virus can also persist in various weed hosts or wild cocoa-related species, which serve as an invisible reservoir for re-infection.

Since no chemical control or cure exists for infected trees, management strategies focus on preventing the spread through rigorous practices:

  • Aggressive roguing of symptomatic trees and surrounding asymptomatic plants.
  • Establishment of large isolation distances between healthy and affected plots.
  • Breeding and planting of virus-resistant or tolerant cocoa varieties.
  • Integrated pest management targeting mealybug populations.
