The causative agent of the disease is Badnavirus alphasacchari, a plant virus with a circular double-stranded DNA genome. It belongs to the Badnavirus genus and is responsible for systemic infections that inhibit the plant's physiological and metabolic functions.

The primary host for this virus is sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum). The virus has a global distribution, affecting sugar production in both tropical and subtropical regions where this commodity crop is intensively grown.

Infected plants typically display symptoms such as chlorotic streaks or mosaic patterns on the leaves. As the infection progresses, affected sugarcane stalks show stunted growth, reduced internode length, and a significant decrease in sucrose content, leading to reduced yields and inferior raw material quality.
