The causal agent of this disease is Badnavirus alphavirgamusae, a pararetrovirus containing double-stranded DNA. This pathogen is notorious for its ability to integrate its genetic material into the host genome, which often leads to the latent presence of the virus within the plant tissue.
The primary hosts of this virus are members of the Musa genus, including essential cultivars used for both subsistence and global trade. The disease is widespread across all major banana-producing regions, representing a significant challenge to sustainable cultivation and export standards.
Symptoms typically manifest as chlorotic streaks on the leaves, which may later progress into dark necrosis. Infected plants often show stunted growth, leaf deformation, and poor fruit bunch development. The reduction in both yield and fruit quality causes substantial economic losses for producers.
Transmission occurs through two main routes: the movement of infected vegetative propagating material and the activity of mealybug vectors.
