Beet swelling badnavirus (Badnavirus betainflatheobromae) is a viral disease caused by a DNA-containing virus within the Badnavirus genus. The pathogen invades the host plant's vascular system, disrupting normal physiological processes and causing systematic infection that affects the entire development of the plant.
The virus primarily affects sugar beet and fodder beet varieties. Its presence within the host tissue leads to significant metabolic shifts, reducing the plant's capacity for photosynthesis and sugar storage. This results in direct economic losses for farmers due to lower crop quality and diminished overall yields at harvest time.
The infection is characterized by distinct symptoms, most notably the appearance of swellings or galls on the petioles and roots, which gives the disease its specific name.
