The pathogen belongs to the Badnavirus genus, characterized by its double-stranded DNA structure, and is known for its ability to persist within the plant's vascular system, leading to chronic infections.
The disease is systemic, meaning that once a plant is infected, the virus spreads to all tissues, including the rhizomes.
