It is a DNA virus that primarily affects plants within the Amaranthaceae family, most notably sugar beet. The infection causes systemic disease, which means the virus circulates throughout the entire plant, leading to long-term physiological disruption and potential yield loss.
The primary crop host is sugar beet (Beta vulgaris). The economic impact of this virus is significant, as it interferes with sucrose accumulation and reduces the quality of the beet root. Furthermore, infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, which reduces the overall biomass and total harvest potential of the affected fields, leading to direct economic losses for farmers.
