Description
Pathogen and disease type. The pathogen is Sugarcane bacilliform virus, scientifically identified as Badnavirus deltasacchari. This virus belongs to the Badnavirus genus and contains a double-stranded DNA genome. It causes a viral disease that systemically infects the vascular tissues of the sugarcane plant, leading to significant physiological disruption throughout the entire life cycle of the crop.
Host crops and impact. The virus specifically targets sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum). The economic impact is substantial as it drastically reduces the yield of stalks and the sucrose content within them. Infections often result in poor ratoon regrowth, meaning the damage persists across multiple harvesting cycles, leading to significant financial losses for sugar producers worldwide.
Symptoms and signs of infection. Clinical symptoms primarily manifest as chlorotic streaks on the leaves, which may occasionally evolve into necrotic lesions. Infected plants often show signs of stunted growth, shortened internodes, and a general reduction in plant vigor. In severe cases, the entire plant may appear dwarfed, and the leaf morphology may become distorted, making the identification of infected stools possible during field inspections.
Conditions for development and spread. Transmission is primarily facilitated by insect vectors, specifically mealybugs (family Pseudococcidae), which acquire and transmit the virus while feeding on plant sap. Additionally, the virus is spread through the use of infected vegetative cuttings (setts). Warm, humid climates are highly conducive to the rapid population growth of insect vectors, thereby increasing the speed of viral transmission across the plantation.
Control and prevention measures. Since there are no chemical cures for viral plant infections, management focuses on prevention and sanitation. Key practices include:
- Sourcing certified virus-free planting material for new fields;
- Regular monitoring and chemical control of mealybug populations;
- Strict sanitization of agricultural equipment to prevent mechanical transmission;
- Rogueing of infected plants early in the season to minimize the primary inoculum reservoir.
