The causal agent of this disease is Badnavirus deltavirgamusae, a member of the genus Badnavirus within the Caulimoviridae family. It is a pararetrovirus characterized by a double-stranded DNA genome that can integrate into the host plant's genome, leading to complex infection dynamics and challenges in eradication.
The virus primarily affects plants of the Musa genus, which includes edible bananas and plantains. It is considered a major constraint to international germplasm exchange and banana production worldwide, as it can cause significant yield losses and reduce fruit quality in many varieties.
Typical symptoms include chlorotic streaks on the leaves that eventually become necrotic. Infected plants may exhibit stunted growth, bunch distortion, and general lack of vigor. The severity of symptoms is often correlated with environmental conditions, as the virus can remain latent until triggered by abiotic stress.
