Description
Causative agent and disease type. The Badnavirus epsiloninflatheobromae is the primary pathogen responsible for the Cacao swollen shoot virus (CSSV) disease. It is a pararetrovirus that affects the host's physiological functions by integrating its genetic material into the plant's cells, leading to severe disruptions in nutrient uptake and metabolic activity within the cocoa tree.
Susceptible crops. The virus is primarily known for infecting the cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao). It is one of the most devastating diseases in the West African cocoa industry, where it poses a significant threat to global chocolate production and the livelihoods of local farmers who depend on this commodity crop.
Symptoms and signs. Infected trees exhibit distinct symptoms including leaf chlorosis, characterized by red or yellow patterns along the leaf veins, and the characteristic swelling of stems and roots, from which the disease derives its name. Additionally, there is a visible reduction in pod size, a decrease in the number of beans, and a general decline in tree vigor over time.
Conditions for development and spread. The virus is transmitted from tree to tree by mealybugs (family Pseudococcidae), which are sap-sucking insects. The transmission efficiency is highest in humid tropical environments where mealybug populations thrive. The disease spreads rapidly through interconnected tree canopies, making dense plantations particularly vulnerable to localized outbreaks.
Damage and preventive measures. The economic impact is profound, often resulting in the total loss of productivity of individual trees within a few years of infection. Because there are no chemical cures, control relies heavily on integrated pest management: regular inspection of the plantation, removal of infected trees (sanitary cutting), and the planting of resistant or tolerant cocoa cultivars to stop the transmission cycle.
