Fig badnavirus (Badnavirus fici) is a viral plant disease caused by a virus belonging to the Badnavirus genus. These viruses are characterized by a circular, double-stranded DNA genome and typically establish systemic infections within their host, leading to long-term physiological stress for the infected trees.

The primary host for this pathogen is the common fig (Ficus carica). The virus is widespread in various cultivation regions, posing a constant threat to fig orchards by reducing both the quality and quantity of the fruit produced, as well as affecting the overall vigor and longevity of the trees.

Symptoms of the disease are diverse but often manifest as mosaic patterns, chlorotic spots, or streaks on the leaves. Infected plants may exhibit stunted growth, reduced leaf size, and general poor health. Over time, these symptoms significantly compromise the photosynthetic capability of the plant, leading to a noticeable decline in crop yields.

The spread of the virus occurs primarily through two channels: mechanical transmission via infected nursery stock and biological transmission via vectors. Mealybugs (Pseudococcidae) are recognized as the primary vectors, carrying the virus from infected trees to healthy ones during the feeding process, which facilitates rapid dissemination within an orchard.

Since there is no chemical cure for viral infections in plants, management relies strictly on prophylactic strategies. Growers should prioritize the purchase of certified virus-free propagation material and implement rigorous pest control programs to reduce the populations of mealybugs. Regular field scouting and the prompt removal of infected plants remain the most effective practices to prevent widespread epidemic outbreaks.
