This pathogen contains double-stranded circular DNA and induces systemic viral infections that disrupt essential physiological processes within the host plant. Transmission occurs primarily through contaminated planting material, posing a severe risk to vegetatively propagated crops.

The primary crop affected by this pathogen is yam (Dioscorea spp.). The virus is host-specific to members of the Dioscorea genus and significantly reduces both the yield quantity and the overall quality of the tubers, which serve as a critical food staple in tropical and subtropical regions globally.

Symptoms of the infection include leaf mosaic patterns, chlorotic spotting, banding, and distortion of the leaf blades, which are characteristic signs of badnavirus infection.
