Description
Causal agent and disease type. The pathogen is Badnavirus gammainflatheobromae, a member of the Badnavirus genus. It is a persistent, systemic viral disease that disrupts the vascular transport system, leading to long-term impairment of plant health and nutrient distribution.
Host range. This virus specifically targets the cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao). Due to its high host specificity, it is primarily managed within cocoa-producing regions where the pathogen cycles between the cultivated trees and wild reservoir hosts.
Symptoms and signs of infection. The disease manifests as distinct chlorotic banding or vein clearing on leaves. Over time, affected trees exhibit restricted growth, distorted leaf development, and a gradual thinning of the canopy. In advanced stages, trees show reduced vigor and significantly lower fruit yields.
Conditions for development and spread. The virus is transmitted primarily by mealybugs (family Pseudococcidae), which feed on the sap of infected trees and carry the virus to healthy ones. The rate of spread is accelerated by high humidity and the presence of alternate plant hosts in the immediate vicinity of plantations.
Harmfulness and control measures. Economic losses are severe due to the chronic nature of the infection. Control relies on strict phytosanitary practices, including the eradication of infected trees to break the transmission cycle.
