Sugarcane bacilliform virus (SCBV) is a member of the Badnavirus genus within the Caulimoviridae family. It is a pararetrovirus containing a double-stranded DNA genome. The virus causes systemic infection and has the unique ability to integrate its genetic material into the host plant's genome, making the disease persistent and challenging to eradicate through conventional breeding.
Crops and Economic Impact
The primary host for this pathogen is sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum). Economic damage is primarily associated with reduced sucrose content, stunted stalk growth, and overall yield depletion. Long-term viral pressure negatively affects the vigor of sugarcane stools, often requiring early plantation replanting and resulting in significant income loss.
Symptoms and Signs
Symptom expression is highly variable and depends on the specific sugarcane genotype and environmental conditions. Common indicators include:
- long, chlorotic streaks on leaves;
- mosaic-like color patterns;
- reduced stalk diameter and stunted internodes;
- general chlorosis of the foliage.
Conditions for Development and Spread
The virus is primarily spread via the use of infected vegetative cuttings (setts). Additionally, insect vectors, specifically mealybugs (Pseudococcidae), play a critical role in transmitting the virus from diseased plants to healthy ones. The most effective strategy is the systematic use of disease-free planting material, typically generated through tissue culture techniques (in vitro propagation). Plantation management should focus on the rigorous control of mealybug populations using integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Furthermore, destroying diseased stools and maintaining proper isolation distances between old and new fields are essential to prevent the spread of the virus.
