Description
Banana streak virus (BSV), encompassing species such as Badnavirus gammavirgamusae, is a significant viral pathogen affecting banana production worldwide. As a pararetrovirus, its genome can be integrated into the host plant's DNA, meaning that some varieties carry the virus in a latent state, which can be activated by environmental stressors.
The virus primarily affects plants within the Musa genus. It poses a severe threat to commercial banana and plantain plantations, causing substantial economic losses in both large-scale export operations and subsistence farming sectors in tropical and subtropical regions.
Typical symptoms include the development of chlorotic streaks on leaves, which progressively turn dark or necrotic over time. Severely affected plants show stunted growth, leaf distortion, and necrosis of the pseudostem. The quality of fruit is significantly impaired, often resulting in misshapen bunches that do not meet market standards.
Transmission occurs through two primary routes: the movement of infected vegetative propagating material and the activity of mealybug vectors (Pseudococcidae). Furthermore, the activation of endogenous viral sequences integrated into the banana genome triggered by stress, such as drought or temperature fluctuations, can lead to sudden outbreaks even in apparently healthy-looking stands.
Management of BSV is challenging due to the potential for latent infection. The most effective strategy involves the use of virus-indexed planting material generated via tissue culture. Additionally, strict quarantine measures, rigorous control of mealybug populations, and the prompt roguing of infected plants are essential practices for maintaining the health and productivity of the plantation.
