Banana streak virus (BSV), specifically identified as Badnavirus iotavirgamusae, is a significant viral pathogen affecting banana crops worldwide. As a member of the Badnavirus genus, it possesses the unique and problematic ability to integrate its DNA into the host plant's genome, which can trigger viral replication under stressful environmental conditions.
This virus primarily infects various species and cultivars of Musa, including both cooking bananas and dessert varieties. The pathogen's presence poses a major threat to agricultural productivity in tropical regions, leading to severe economic losses for farmers due to reduced fruit yield and poor quality of harvested bunches.
The primary symptoms of the disease include chlorotic striping on leaves, which may turn into necrotic streaks as the infection progresses. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, reduced vigor, and distorted leaf development.
