Description
The disease is caused by Badnavirus maculapiperis, a member of the genus Badnavirus within the family Caulimoviridae. It is a double-stranded circular DNA virus that affects plants by integrating its genetic material into the host cells. This pathogen is classified as a systemic virus causing chronic physiological disorders in the plant organism.
The primary host for this virus is the pepper plant (genus Piper), specifically black pepper (Piper nigrum). The disease significantly restricts the productivity of plantations in regions where this crop is grown, affecting both the commercial quality of the fruits and the overall health of perennial plantings.
Symptoms of the infection include chlorotic spots, mosaic patterns on the leaf blades, and distortion of the shoots. Infected plants frequently exhibit stunted growth, shortened internodes, and a noticeable reduction in overall vegetative biomass, which leads to premature leaf drop and decreased yields.
The development and transmission of the virus occur primarily through infected planting material. In natural environments, the virus can be spread by insects with piercing-sucking mouthparts, such as mealybugs or aphids, which transmit viral particles from infected plants to healthy ones while feeding on plant sap.
