Description

Pathogen and disease type. The causal agent is a member of the Badnavirus genus, which belongs to the Caulimoviridae family. This is a systemic viral disease that forces the plant to incorporate viral genetic material into its own, resulting in chronic physiological dysfunction. Unlike fungal or bacterial infections, this condition cannot be cured by conventional pesticides or antibiotics.

Susceptible crops. The disease specifically targets the Spiraea genus. These flowering shrubs are highly popular in landscaping, making them susceptible to localized outbreaks. Because it is a systemic infection, once a plant is infected, it typically remains a reservoir of the virus for the rest of its life, serving as a source of inoculum for neighboring plants.

Symptoms and signs. Typical symptoms include chlorotic spotting, leaf mottling, and vein banding patterns. As the infection progresses, leaves may show significant distortion, stunting, and premature shedding. The plant's overall growth rate declines, and its aesthetic value is significantly reduced, which is particularly problematic for specimens grown for their foliage or floral display.

Conditions for development and spread. The virus is transmitted primarily by sap-sucking insects such as aphids, leafhoppers, and whiteflies. These vectors ingest the virus while feeding and transmit it to healthy plants. Additionally, the disease is frequently spread through vegetative propagation using infected cuttings, as well as mechanical transmission occurring during pruning when infected sap is carried on blades to healthy tissues.

Harmfulness and protection measures. The economic and ornamental damage caused by this virus is severe, as it weakens the plant's immune system and cold tolerance. Since there is no therapeutic treatment, management must focus on prevention. This includes aggressive vector control, sanitizing pruning equipment with disinfectants, and rogueing infected plants to prevent the spread of the virus across the entire landscape.
