Description
Badnavirus reterubi is a viral pathogen known to affect Rubus species, particularly red raspberry. As a member of the Badnavirus genus, this virus is characterized by its double-stranded DNA genome and its ability to cause systemic infections that persist throughout the lifespan of the host plant.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are cultivars of raspberries and blackberries. The virus primarily inhabits the phloem of the plant, disrupting the movement of photosynthates and other essential nutrients. Once infected, the entire plant system is compromised, leading to a long-term decline in productivity and physiological health.
The most common symptoms include a distinct yellowing of the leaf veins, often referred to as "yellow net" symptoms. This chlorosis may progress to leaf crinkling or stunted growth of the entire plant. Because these symptoms can be easily confused with nutritional deficiencies, laboratory testing is often required for an accurate diagnosis.
The disease spreads through two main pathways: insect vectors and propagation. Aphids are the most critical vectors, as they acquire the virus while feeding on infected phloem and transmit it to healthy plants. Furthermore, because the virus is systemic, taking cuttings from an infected mother plant ensures that the new plant will also be a carrier of the infection.
Prevention is the only effective strategy, as there are no chemical cures for established viral infections. Essential management practices include:
- sourcing virus-indexed, certified nursery stock;
- implementing rigorous aphid control programs;
- practicing strict sanitation by removing symptomatic plants immediately;
- maintaining good site isolation to prevent virus introduction from nearby wild Rubus populations.
