The disease is caused by Badnavirus tessellocastaneae, a virus belonging to the genus Badnavirus. This pathogen affects chestnut trees by infiltrating the cellular machinery and disrupting metabolic functions. As a systemic disease, it spreads throughout the plant's vascular system, making it difficult to contain once the infection becomes established.

The primary host for this virus is the sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa). The infection can significantly impact orchard productivity and tree vitality.
