Description
The disease is caused by the Badnavirus tessellocitri, a double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Badnavirus genus. It disrupts the vascular systems of the plant, leading to systemic infection that spreads throughout the tree's tissues over time.
Primary hosts for this virus are various species and hybrids of the genus Citrus. The infection is particularly harmful to commercial orchards, as it leads to decreased fruit yield and diminished vigor of the trees, significantly impacting profitability.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by mosaic patterns on the leaves, including chlorotic spots, streaks, and rings. Affected plants often exhibit stunted growth, shortened internodes, and leaf distortion, which compromises the photosynthetic capacity of the canopy and weakens the overall structure of the tree.
