Description

The causative agent of the disease is Badnavirus tessellostyphnolobii, a plant virus from the Badnavirus genus containing double-stranded DNA. This pathogen infects the host's vascular system, disrupting normal metabolic processes and nutrient transportation within the plant tissues.

The primary host for this virus is the Japanese pagoda tree (Styphnolobium japonicum). The virus poses a serious threat to urban landscaping and nurseries, where the aesthetic quality and health of these trees are of significant importance.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as distinct mosaic patterns on the foliage, including chlorotic spots, streaks, and deformation of the leaves. In severe cases, tree growth is significantly stunted, and the overall vigor and crown structure of the tree begin to decline noticeably.

The virus spreads mainly through insect vectors, such as aphids, which transfer the pathogen while feeding. Additionally, human-mediated transmission occurs through the use of infected grafting scions or contaminated pruning tools, which can spread the virus rapidly through a nursery batch.

Since there are no chemical cures for this viral infection, management strategies must focus on strict preventative measures:

  • Sourcing certified virus-free plant materials from reputable nurseries.
  • Implementing rigorous pest management programs to control aphid populations.
  • Sterilizing all pruning and grafting tools between each plant to avoid mechanical transmission.

  • Monitoring the health of stock plants to ensure early detection and quarantine of symptomatic trees.
