Description

The causal agent of this plant disease is Badnavirus tessellotheobromae, a virus from the Caulimoviridae family. It is a pararetrovirus containing double-stranded DNA, which infects the host's vascular tissues and induces long-term systemic stress, disrupting the plant's photosynthetic efficiency.

The primary host for this pathogen is the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao). The virus is a significant concern in cacao-producing regions, where it impacts both the longevity of individual trees and the overall yield consistency of the orchard.

Symptomatology involves distinct mosaic patterns on leaves, characterized by chlorotic patches and streaks. Infected trees often exhibit stunted growth, deformation of new leaves, reduced fruit set, and in severe cases, severe dieback of terminal branches which compromises the structural integrity of the tree.

The virus is primarily disseminated by insect vectors, most notably mealybugs (family Pseudococcidae), which transmit the viral particles while feeding on phloem sap. Furthermore, the movement of infected plant material, such as budwood for grafting or seedlings for nursery stock, facilitates the long-distance spread of the infection across different geographical areas.

Control measures primarily focus on eradication and prevention. Since there are no chemical cures for viral infections, producers must adopt rigorous phytosanitary practices. This includes regular inspection of the orchard, immediate removal of symptomatic trees, systematic control of mealybug populations, and the use of certified pathogen-free grafting material to maintain the health of the crop.
