Description
The disease is caused by Badnavirus tesselloziziphi, a viral pathogen that specifically targets plants within the genus Ziziphus. As a member of the badnavirus group, it contains a double-stranded DNA genome and induces long-term systemic infections. Once a tree is infected, the virus spreads throughout its vascular system, making it nearly impossible to eradicate through standard fungicidal or bactericidal treatments.
The primary host for this pathogen is the jujube tree (Ziziphus jujuba). The infection can impact both commercial orchards and ornamental plantings. While jujube is generally a hardy species, this viral infection poses a significant threat to its productivity and overall physiological health, especially in warmer regions where the climate favors the activity of virus-carrying vectors.
The most distinctive symptom is the development of a mosaic pattern on the leaves, characterized by a tessellated appearance—a network of light and dark green spots. In addition to discoloration, affected trees often exhibit stunted growth, leaf curling, and severe distortion of foliage. Fruit production is drastically affected, with many fruits becoming malformed, smaller in size, and ultimately unsuitable for fresh market sale.
The transmission of Badnavirus tesselloziziphi occurs primarily through two pathways: vegetative propagation and insect vectors. Infected scions or rootstocks are the most common source of initial orchard outbreaks. Within an orchard, various sap-sucking insects, such as aphids, act as vectors, moving the virus from infected trees to healthy ones during their feeding process. Poor sanitation during pruning also facilitates mechanical transmission.
Control measures must be strictly preventative, focusing on keeping the pathogen out of the orchard. This includes sourcing planting material from certified disease-free nurseries and conducting thorough inspections of new stock. If a tree tests positive for the virus, it must be removed promptly and destroyed to prevent further spread. Ongoing management should include consistent insect control and rigorous disinfection of pruning tools between trees.
