Description
The causative agent of this disease is Badnavirus theobromae, a virus with a circular double-stranded DNA genome. It belongs to the Badnavirus genus and is known for its ability to cause severe systemic infections in cacao plants, affecting their vascular transport and general physiological vitality.
The primary host for this virus is the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao), a vital tropical crop. The virus causes significant economic losses in regions where cocoa cultivation is the mainstay of the local agricultural economy, particularly in West Africa and parts of Latin America.
Symptoms often manifest as characteristic vein-clearing or chlorotic banding on the leaves. As the infection progresses, symptoms may include the swelling of stems and roots, reduced pod production, and severe leaf necrosis. In chronic cases, the tree eventually ceases to bear fruit and dies.
Transmission occurs through vegetative propagation, such as the use of infected cuttings, and via insect vectors. Mealybugs (family Pseudococcidae) are the most significant vectors of the virus, transferring the pathogen while feeding on the phloem sap of cacao trees.
Effective management relies on a strict integrated pest management (IPM) program. Since there is no cure, the primary strategy involves the containment of the virus. This is achieved by removing and destroying infected trees to create buffer zones, establishing quarantine measures for new plantings, and implementing biological control methods to reduce mealybug populations within the plantation.
