Description
Pathogen and disease type. Banana streak virus (BSV), including Badnavirus thetavirgamusae, is a significant plant pathogen from the Badnavirus genus. It is characterized as a systemic viral infection that affects the vascular tissues and metabolic integrity of the host plant.
Host range. The virus primarily affects various cultivars of the Musa genus, including dessert bananas and plantains. It is found in nearly every banana-growing region worldwide, representing a major challenge for the global banana industry due to its stability and complex genomic integration.
Symptoms and signs. Typical symptoms include chlorotic streaks on leaves that eventually turn into dark necrotic bands. Severe infections lead to stunting of the entire plant, distorted bunches, and malformed fruits, which are often unsuitable for market consumption, causing substantial economic losses.
Conditions for development. Transmission occurs primarily through infected vegetative propagules (suckers). Additionally, mealybugs (e.g., Saccharicoccus sacchari) act as vectors in the field. A unique biological feature is the existence of endogenous viral sequences that can activate the virus under environmental stress, such as drought or heat.
Protection and prevention. Controlling the disease requires the use of virus-indexed, tissue-cultured plantlets. Producers must implement rigorous field sanitation by roguing infected plants and managing mealybug populations using integrated pest management strategies. Preventing the movement of infected plant material remains the most critical preventative measure.
