Bougainvillea vein yellowing is a viral disease caused by Badnavirus venabougainvilleae. As a member of the Caulimoviridae family, this virus integrates its genetic material into the plant's cells, causing systematic infection that disrupts the health and aesthetic quality of the host plant.

The primary host for this pathogen is the genus Bougainvillea. These popular ornamental woody vines are susceptible to infection, which can persist in the plant tissue indefinitely, significantly impacting the growth vigor and the production of bracts, which are the main ornamental feature of these plants.

The key symptoms of the disease include distinct chlorotic patterns along the leaf veins, commonly referred to as vein yellowing. In advanced stages, leaves may show signs of crinkling, reduced leaf size, and overall stunting of the plant branches. These symptoms are often more pronounced during periods of active growth when the metabolic demand of the plant is high.
