Cocoa vein banding virus (Badnavirus venatheobromae) is a viral pathogen of the genus Badnavirus. It is a pararetrovirus, meaning it involves a reverse transcription step in its replication cycle, and it is known for its ability to integrate into the host plant's genome, making chronic infections persistent and difficult to eradicate.

The primary host for this disease is Theobroma cacao. This virus is economically significant in regions where cacao production is critical, as infection leads to physiological stress in the trees, reduced vitality, and a consistent decline in yield quality and volume over time.

The most distinctive symptom is the appearance of chlorotic or yellowish banding along the veins of the leaves. In many cases, this is accompanied by leaf curling, distortion, and stunted growth of the branches. Severe infections can lead to tree decline, resulting in fewer flowers and pods compared to healthy, vigorous trees.

The virus is transmitted primarily by mealybugs (Pseudococcidae), which act as biological vectors. As these insects feed on the phloem of infected trees, they acquire the virus and transmit it to healthy hosts. Human activity, such as the trade and transport of infected grafting material or vegetative cuttings, also plays a major role in the long-distance spread of the disease.

Effective management focuses on preventive measures. Since there is no curative treatment for the virus, growers must emphasize phytosanitary practices, including the removal and destruction of symptomatic plants, monitoring and controlling mealybug populations, and ensuring that all new plantings are sourced from certified virus-free nurseries to maintain the long-term health of the crop.
