Description

Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV) is widely considered the most serious viral disease affecting banana plants globally. It is caused by a single-stranded DNA virus from the Babuvirus genus. Once a plant is infected, the virus spreads through the phloem, causing severe systemic symptoms that lead to stunted growth and total crop failure.

The virus primarily affects species within the Musa genus, encompassing almost all commercial banana cultivars. The disease is persistent and remains in the plant's vascular tissue for its entire lifespan. This means that any sucker or rhizome taken from an infected plant will also carry the virus, making the movement of infected planting material a primary factor in the spread of the disease.

Clinical signs of the disease include leaves that are stunted, narrow, and upright, creating a "bunchy" appearance at the apex of the plant. A hallmark symptom is the presence of irregular, dark green "dot-dash" streaks on the leaf veins, petiole, and midrib. Eventually, infected plants cease to produce fruit entirely, rendering them worthless for commercial production.

The transmission of BBTV is mediated exclusively by the banana aphid, Pentalonia nigronervosa. The aphid acquires the virus by feeding on infected plant sap and remains a carrier for the duration of its life. Because the aphid is highly mobile and thrives in tropical environments, it can rapidly introduce the virus to previously healthy areas if not managed effectively.

Control strategies for BBTV focus on exclusion and eradication. Growers should only use virus-free planting material sourced from certified laboratories. In affected areas, the primary strategy involves the immediate removal and destruction of infected plants, which must be treated with insecticides prior to removal to ensure that any aphids present are killed and do not disperse to neighboring healthy plants.
