Banmivirus

Banmivirus is a genus of viruses belonging to the family Virgaviridae. This pathogen is known to cause significant viral diseases in various agricultural and ornamental crops, disrupting cellular metabolism and leading to severe developmental impairment in host plants.

The causative agent is a single-stranded RNA virus. Infection typically occurs through mechanical transmission, often facilitated by agricultural practices such as pruning, thinning, or handling plants with contaminated tools. Furthermore, the virus can be spread by insect vectors or via direct contact between the root systems of healthy and infected plants in the field.

Susceptible hosts include various members of the Solanaceae and Fabaceae families, alongside several common garden vegetables and decorative flowers. Once established, the virus causes a systemic infection that compromises the plant's structural integrity and physiological function, often leading to reduced crop yields.

Key symptoms of Banmivirus infection include the following signs:

• Chlorotic spots and distinct mosaic patterns on the leaves.
• Deformation and curling of leaf structures.
• Stunted plant growth and overall development.
• Reduced quality of produce and premature fruit drop.
• Flower malformation and impaired reproductive capacity.

The virus thrives under moderate temperatures and high humidity, which facilitate its spread across plant populations. Effective disease management strategies focus on prevention, including the use of certified virus-free seeds, routine sterilization of agricultural machinery and tools, and rigorous monitoring and control of known insect vectors to minimize field outbreaks.
