Becurtovirus is a genus of plant viruses within the Geminiviridae family. These viruses are known for causing severe systemic diseases in various agricultural crops. Being characterized by a circular single-stranded DNA genome, they are highly specialized in their interactions with host plants, specifically targeting the phloem tissues.

The primary hosts for Becurtovirus include sugar beet, spinach, and various species from the Amaranthaceae and Solanaceae families. The virus is known to survive in a wide range of weed species, which act as alternate hosts, allowing the virus to persist in the environment even in the absence of primary commercial crops.

The hallmark of a Becurtovirus infection is the phenomenon known as curly top. Infected plants exhibit leaf curling, yellowing, stunted growth, and thickened or distorted leaf veins. In severe cases, the development of root systems is severely impaired, and the plant may become necrotic or die prematurely, resulting in significant yield reductions.

Transmission occurs exclusively through insect vectors, specifically leafhoppers such as Circulifer tenellus. The spread of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly temperature and humidity levels that influence leafhopper migration patterns. Once a vector acquires the virus, it remains infectious for the rest of its life cycle.

Effective management strategies for Becurtovirus involve an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. This includes the implementation of rigorous weed control to eliminate virus reservoirs, the application of systemic insecticides to manage vector populations during high-risk periods, and the cultivation of resistant crop varieties. Furthermore, adjusting planting schedules to avoid peak insect activity periods is a critical preventive measure for farmers.
