Description
The disease is caused by Becurtovirus betae, a virus within the Geminiviridae family. It is a severe systemic pathogen that disrupts the vascular system of the host plant, leading to stunted growth and significant physiological stress. The primary transmission vector is the beet leafhopper, which introduces the viral particles while feeding on the phloem sap of susceptible plants.
Sugar beet is the primary commercial crop affected by this pathogen, although the virus has a wide host range, including various weeds and vegetables. Because the virus is transmitted by mobile insect vectors, the disease often appears in sporadic outbreaks, frequently concentrated in areas where the vector population survives during the winter months.
The characteristic symptoms include inward curling and thickening of the leaves, accompanied by yellowing or chlorosis. Affected plants exhibit shortened internodes, creating a stunted, bunched, or curly appearance at the crown. Root development is severely restricted, often resulting in a hairy root phenotype due to the proliferation of secondary rootlets, which drastically reduces both root mass and sugar content.
Development and spread of the virus are highly dependent on environmental conditions. Hot and dry weather patterns promote the migration and rapid multiplication of beet leafhoppers. Furthermore, mild winters allow for larger populations of vectors to survive, increasing the risk of early-season infection when young sugar beet seedlings are at their most vulnerable stage.
Effective management strategies require an integrated pest management approach:
- controlling weed hosts that harbor the virus and the vector;
- applying systemic insecticides to suppress leafhopper populations;
- utilizing planting dates that avoid peak periods of insect migration;
- implementing spatial isolation from previous year's crops;
- selecting resistant or tolerant beet varieties for high-risk areas.
