Description

Begomovirus is a genus of plant viruses in the family Geminiviridae that poses a significant threat to global agriculture. These viruses are characterized by a circular, single-stranded DNA genome and are exclusively transmitted by the whitefly species Bemisia tabaci, making vector control the primary objective in disease management.

These viruses affect a wide range of economically important crops, including tomatoes, peppers, beans, squash, and cotton. They are particularly destructive in tropical and subtropical regions, where host plants and whitefly populations are present throughout the entire year, allowing the virus to persist continuously.

The symptoms of a Begomovirus infection are highly characteristic and often include severe leaf curling, yellowing mosaic patterns, stunting, and reduced plant vigor. Fruits and vegetables from infected plants are typically distorted, smaller than normal, and suffer from poor nutritional and aesthetic quality.

The development of the disease is heavily dictated by the environmental conditions that favor whitefly reproduction, such as high temperatures and relative humidity. In greenhouse environments, the virus can spread rapidly if initial infections are not detected and managed promptly, as the vector moves easily between plants.

Since there are no chemical treatments available to cure plants once infected by a Begomovirus, management focuses solely on prevention. This includes the use of certified virus-free planting material, the implementation of physical barriers like insect-proof netting, rigorous weeding programs to eliminate alternative hosts, and integrated pest management (IPM) strategies to suppress the whitefly population.
