Pathogen and Disease Type. Begomovirus abelsmoschusmexicoense is a viral pathogen belonging to the Geminiviridae family. It is a single-stranded DNA virus that causes systemic infections in host plants, leading to severe physiological disruptions, impaired growth, and significant agricultural losses in infested areas.
Affected Crops and Damage. The primary host for this virus is okra (Abelmoschus esculentus). The virus interferes with the plant's metabolic processes, resulting in stunted plants, deformed fruit, and reduced yield quality. Without proper management, this disease can cause total crop failure in susceptible varieties.
Symptoms and Signs. Infected plants typically exhibit classic symptoms of viral infection, including mosaic patterns, interveinal yellowing (chlorosis), and severe leaf curling or crinkling. Affected plants often show significantly stunted growth, reduced leaf size, and abnormal fruit development, which makes harvesting difficult and non-profitable.
Conditions of Development and Spread. The virus is transmitted in a persistent, circulative manner by the whitefly vector, Bemisia tabaci.
