Begomovirus abutilonbrazilense is a viral plant pathogen belonging to the Geminiviridae family. It is a persistent, circulative virus that disrupts the normal hormonal and metabolic balance within plant cells, leading to severe morphological changes in the foliage and stems of susceptible plant species.
The primary hosts of this virus are members of the Malvaceae family, especially ornamental Abutilon species. However, its host range can extend to various vegetable crops, such as tomatoes, where the presence of the virus can jeopardize the physiological integrity of the plants and impede their reproductive capabilities.
Symptoms of the infection are highly distinct, typically presenting as vivid yellow or white mosaic patterns on the leaves. The chlorophyll degradation follows the vein architecture of the leaf, often accompanied by leaf curling, stunting, and reduced plant vigor. These symptoms are not merely aesthetic; they indicate a significant decrease in the plant's photosynthetic efficiency.
The transmission of the virus is biologically linked to the silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). The whitefly acquires the virus through feeding on infected phloem sap and transmits it during subsequent feeding bouts. Environmental conditions such as warm, dry weather are critical drivers for the rapid proliferation of the insect vector, which subsequently facilitates the swift spread of the virus throughout the crop.
Management of this viral infection is challenging as there are no direct chemical treatments to cure an already infected plant. Therefore, control focuses on prevention and vector suppression. This includes the use of insect-proof screens in greenhouses, strict weed management to remove potential viral reservoirs, and the systematic use of insecticides to maintain low populations of whiteflies. Cultivating resistant or tolerant varieties remains the most sustainable approach to long-term disease management.
