Description
Abutilon mosaic is a significant viral disease caused by the Begomovirus abutilonis, a member of the Geminiviridae family. The virus is characterized by a circular single-stranded DNA genome. It is a systemic infection that colonizes the plant's vascular tissue, profoundly disrupting physiological processes and photosynthetic activity within the host.
The primary hosts of this virus are species within the Abutilon genus, specifically Abutilon striatum. However, the virus can also affect other members of the Malvaceae family. Its presence is most frequently observed in ornamental greenhouse settings, where dense plant populations and climate-controlled environments provide ideal conditions for disease outbreaks.
The classic symptoms include distinctive chlorotic, bright yellow, or mosaic patterns on the leaves. Infected foliage often displays stunted growth and malformation. Because the virus interferes with chloroplast development, plants become significantly weakened, showing reduced growth rates and poor flowering performance, which renders them unsuitable for commercial sale.
The transmission of Begomovirus abutilonis is exclusively mediated by insect vectors. The tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) is the most efficient vector of this pathogen. Once the whitefly acquires the virus during feeding, it becomes a carrier for the remainder of its life. The virus is then introduced into healthy plants when the whitefly feeds on phloem sap.
Effective disease management relies heavily on controlling the vector population. Chemical control using systemic insecticides, combined with the use of sticky yellow traps, is essential. Furthermore, strict hygiene protocols must be implemented, including the removal of infected plants and the use of insect-proof netting in greenhouses. Regularly disinfecting tools and monitoring nursery stock are also vital steps in preventing the spread of the virus.
