Begomovirus agerahualianense is a viral plant pathogen belonging to the genus Begomovirus within the Geminiviridae family. These viruses are characterized by their single-stranded DNA genome and represent significant threats to global agriculture. The pathogen acts as a systemic infection agent, causing physiological disturbances that fundamentally compromise the host plant's development.

The primary host range includes members of the Asteraceae family, most notably Ageratum conyzoides, though its reach can extend to various ornamental and vegetable crops. The virus resides primarily in the phloem tissue, from which it spreads throughout the vascular system, leading to long-term impact on the host's vitality and reproductive capacity.

Symptoms of the infection are distinct and often debilitating for the plant. They include severe mosaic patterns, leaf curling, yellowing (chlorosis), and significant stunted growth. Often, the plant displays a bushy appearance due to the proliferation of lateral shoots and reduced internode length, which drastically reduces the photosynthetic efficiency of the plant canopy.

Transmission of the virus occurs exclusively through the silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) in a persistent, circulative manner. Once a whitefly ingests the viral particles, it retains the ability to infect healthy plants for its remaining lifespan. The spread is facilitated by environmental conditions that favor the rapid reproduction of these whiteflies, particularly in greenhouses and humid field conditions.

Effective management focuses on vector control, as there is currently no cure for the viral infection once established. Growers must implement strict sanitation protocols, such as removing symptomatic plants immediately, controlling weeds that act as virus reservoirs, and using protective netting. Chemical control must be managed carefully to avoid developing resistance in whitefly populations, favoring a balanced approach with biological agents.
