The causal agent of this disease is Begomovirus agerainvolutionis, a member of the Geminiviridae family. As a viral pathogen with a circular single-stranded DNA genome, it poses a significant threat to greenhouse and ornamental plant production worldwide, causing systemic infections that hinder normal plant physiological processes.

The virus primarily affects plants of the genus Ageratum, but its host range may extend to other sensitive species within the Asteraceae family. Certain weed species often function as alternative hosts, allowing the virus to persist in the environment when primary crop hosts are absent or during seasonal rotations.

Typical symptoms of infection include severe downward curling of the leaves, systemic chlorosis, and the formation of mosaic patterns.
