Begomovirus ageravenae is a viral pathogen classified within the Begomovirus genus of the Geminiviridae family. The virus is characterized by a single-stranded DNA genome. It is known to cause systemic infections in various host plants, predominantly decorative species such as Ageratum, and is disseminated in nature by insect vectors, primarily the silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci).
The host range of this virus includes diverse ornamental plants and a variety of wild weeds that function as primary inoculum reservoirs. Infection is initiated when a whitefly feeds on an infected plant, ingesting the virus, and subsequently transmits it to healthy plants during the feeding process. This mechanism facilitates the rapid spread of the pathogen within greenhouses and open fields alike.
Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as distinct chlorotic mosaic patterns on leaves, interveinal yellowing, and severe tissue distortion. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, reduced internode length, and overall physiological stress. In highly susceptible varieties, the viral load can lead to a significant decline in plant vigor, rendering the produce unmarketable and reducing ornamental or agricultural value.
Disease outbreaks are highly dependent on the vector population density. Warm, humid conditions are ideal for whitefly proliferation, which in turn leads to a higher incidence of viral transmission. The virus is highly persistent, and its ability to survive in weed hosts allows it to endure through periods when primary crop hosts are not present, creating a continuous infection cycle.
