Alcea begomovirus is a plant pathogenic virus belonging to the Geminiviridae family. It is known for causing significant systemic infections in plants, leading to severe physiological disruptions and morphological deformations. As a DNA virus, it relies on complex molecular mechanisms to manipulate host cell machinery for its replication.
The host range of this virus is primarily restricted to members of the Malvaceae family. Plants such as Alcea rosea (hollyhock) and various species of Hibiscus are the most common hosts. The virus can affect both ornamental and wild varieties, causing widespread problems in gardens, nurseries, and public green spaces.
Symptoms of the infection are often distinct and typically involve systemic foliage abnormalities. Key indicators include:
- yellow mosaic patterns or mottling on the leaves;
- leaf curling, crinkling, and distortion;
- stunted growth and overall reduction in plant vigor;
- reduced flower production and malformed floral structures.
Transmission occurs primarily through biological vectors, specifically whiteflies (Aleyrodidae). These insects ingest the virus while feeding on infected phloem and subsequently transmit it to healthy plants during their feeding cycle. Environmental factors such as high temperatures and optimal humidity play a critical role, as they favor the rapid proliferation of whitefly populations, thereby facilitating the spread of the virus.
Management of Alcea begomovirus is challenging because there are no curative treatments once a plant is infected. Consequently, control strategies prioritize prevention and vector management. This includes rigorous sanitation practices (removing infected plants), monitoring and chemical control of whitefly populations, and utilizing virus-free planting stock. Maintaining a healthy growing environment helps mitigate the impact of the disease.
