Description

Allamanda begomovirus is a plant viral pathogen belonging to the Begomovirus genus within the Geminiviridae family. These viruses are characterized by their small, geminate particles containing single-stranded DNA and are notorious for causing significant yield and quality losses in various host plants.

The primary host for this pathogen is Allamanda cathartica, a prized ornamental vine. The virus acts systemically, colonizing the host's vascular tissues and interfering with vital metabolic processes, which leads to the severe stunting of the entire plant structure.

Symptoms of the disease manifest as chlorotic mosaics, yellow vein banding, and leaf curling. As the infection progresses, affected plants show stunted growth, shortened internodes, and a significant decrease in the number and size of blossoms, often rendering the plant aesthetically useless.

The transmission of this begomovirus is primarily carried out by the silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). This insect acts as a vector, acquiring the virus during feeding and spreading it rapidly throughout a greenhouse or nursery environment. The virus is persistent, meaning the vector remains infectious for the remainder of its lifespan.

Management of the disease focuses on an integrated approach to pest control and sanitation:

  • Implement strict vector control programs using systemic insecticides.
  • Use yellow sticky traps for early detection of whitefly populations.
  • Screen greenhouse openings with fine mesh to prevent vector migration.
  • Promptly remove and destroy all symptomatic plants to minimize the inoculum source.
  • Enforce strict quarantine and inspection protocols for new plant introductions.
