Description
The causative agent of this disease is a virus belonging to the Begomovirus genus, which is obligately transmitted by the sweetpotato whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). This viral infection spreads systemically throughout the host plant, disrupting internal physiology and preventing normal development.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are solanaceous crops, with tomatoes being the most susceptible. However, the virus can also infect peppers, eggplants, and various weeds, which act as secondary hosts that harbor the virus during the off-season, creating a continuous infection cycle in the field.
Symptoms of the infection typically include distinct leaf curling, where the margins curl upwards, accompanied by stunted plant growth and yellowing of the foliage. Infected plants often show a bushy appearance with reduced internode length, and in severe cases, the fruit set is either absent or the fruits are severely distorted and unmarketable.
The disease spread is closely linked to the population density of the whitefly vector. Environmental conditions characterized by warm, dry weather favor the rapid reproduction of the insect, leading to exponential viral spread within agricultural landscapes if timely management strategies are not implemented.
Disease management focuses primarily on vector control and preventative measures. Farmers should employ integrated pest management (IPM) practices, including the use of fine-mesh greenhouse screens, reflective mulches, biological control agents, and systemic insecticides. Removing infected plants and controlling alternative weed hosts is critical to minimizing inoculum pressure in the vicinity of the crop.
