Description
The causative agent of the disease is a virus belonging to the Begomovirus genus of the Geminiviridae family. The virus is transmitted exclusively by the tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) in a persistent manner, meaning the insect remains infective throughout its lifespan after ingesting the viral particles.
The primary hosts of this virus are solanaceous crops, including tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and tobacco. Various weed species also serve as crucial reservoirs, allowing the virus to persist in the field environment even when the main crops are not present, which ensures a continuous cycle of infection.
Symptoms are characterized by significant leaf curling, upward cupping of leaflets, and severe stunting of the entire plant. Affected plants often exhibit yellowing at the leaf margins, distorted growth patterns, and a drastic reduction in fruit production, resulting in either total failure of fruit set or deformed, inedible yields.
Environmental conditions play a major role in the spread of the disease, particularly high ambient temperatures and dry climates that favor rapid whitefly population growth. As the whitefly is highly mobile and prolific in these conditions, the virus can spread throughout a commercial field in a very short amount of time.
Since there are no curative measures for infected plants, management must focus on prevention and integrated pest management (IPM). This involves controlling whitefly populations through chemical and physical barriers, eliminating host weeds, and utilizing resistant cultivars to mitigate the economic impact of the virus on agriculture.
