Description
The disease associated with Begomovirus bemisiasexti is caused by a virus belonging to the Geminiviridae family. It is a highly destructive viral condition transmitted exclusively by the tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). As an obligate vector-borne virus, it enters the plant's vascular system during the whitefly's feeding process, leading to systemic infection that severely disrupts the plant's metabolic processes.
This pathogen has a broad host range, primarily infecting Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae families. Commercially important crops such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants are most susceptible. Furthermore, the virus can persist in various weed species, which serve as reservoirs, facilitating the survival of the pathogen even when primary crops are not present in the field.
Infected plants exhibit distinctive symptoms, including severe curling and yellowing of the upper leaves, chlorosis, and stunted growth. The plant often develops a bushy appearance due to the proliferation of lateral shoots and reduced internode length. Fruit development is significantly compromised, leading to undersized, deformed fruits that are unsuitable for commercial sale, resulting in massive economic losses.
The transmission and spread of the virus are heavily influenced by environmental conditions and the population density of the whitefly vector. Warm, dry climates promote the rapid reproduction of Bemisia tabaci, making greenhouses and tropical regions high-risk zones. The virus spreads efficiently as infected adult whiteflies migrate from reservoir weeds to healthy crops, causing rapid outbreaks within weeks.
Effective management strategies must focus on integrated pest management (IPM) to minimize the impact:
- Utilizing resistant or tolerant crop varieties specifically bred for viral defense.
- Implementing strict greenhouse hygiene and screening to block whitefly entry.
- Regular monitoring of whitefly populations using yellow sticky traps.
- Systematic application of insecticides and biological control agents to keep vector populations low.
- Aggressive weed management to remove potential inoculum sources.
