The causative agent of this disease is a virus belonging to the Begomovirus genus within the Geminiviridae family. It is a single-stranded DNA virus that causes systemic infection by invading the plant's vascular tissue, leading to significant metabolic disturbances.

The primary host range includes various members of the Fabaceae family, particularly common beans. The virus is also known to persist in various weed species, which act as reservoirs and play a crucial role in the survival of the pathogen throughout the year.
