Boerhavia begomovirus is a viral plant pathogen classified within the genus Begomovirus of the Geminiviridae family. These viruses are characterized by a circular single-stranded DNA genome and are primarily known for their ability to severely disrupt plant development by infecting the phloem tissues.
The disease is fundamentally a systemic viral infection. Once introduced into the plant, the virus replicates within the cells, leading to a breakdown of normal physiological functions. The host plant's capacity to transport nutrients is compromised, which directly results in poor development and structural abnormalities.
The host range of this pathogen includes various species of the Boerhavia genus, which often act as natural reservoirs for the virus. In agricultural landscapes, the presence of these weed species near cultivated crops significantly increases the risk of viral outbreaks, especially when vector populations are high.
Clinical signs of the infection typically include:
- Visible mosaic patterns and yellowing (chlorosis) on foliage.
- Leaf curling, twisting, and overall stunting of the plant height.
- Vein yellowing or browning as the infection progresses.
- Significant reduction in flower production and overall crop yield potential.
Management strategies focus heavily on vector control. Since the virus is transmitted by insects like whiteflies, integrated pest management (IPM) practices are essential. This includes the use of systemic insecticides to reduce vector populations, strict sanitation of fields to eliminate weed hosts, and the deployment of resistant cultivars whenever available to mitigate losses.
