Cabbage begomovirus (Begomovirus brassicae) represents a significant threat to cruciferous crops, belonging to the Geminiviridae family. This virus is characterized by a circular single-stranded DNA genome and relies heavily on insect vectors for its transmission. It causes serious systemic infections that affect the physiological development of the host plant from the early stages of growth.

The virus primarily affects various Brassica species, including cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and canola, as well as several wild weeds. The ability of the virus to persist in wild hosts during off-seasons provides a continuous source of inoculum, which can lead to widespread outbreaks in commercial fields during favorable conditions.

Key symptoms of the infection include yellowing (chlorosis), leaf curling, stunted growth, and the development of distorted, reduced-sized leaves. In severe cases, the entire plant structure becomes deformed, which prevents head formation in heading vegetables and leads to total economic loss of the affected crop.

The development of the disease is closely tied to the lifecycle of the whitefly, which serves as the primary vector. Elevated temperatures and dry climate conditions accelerate the life cycle of the vector, leading to rapid spread of the virus throughout the field as insects move between healthy and infected plants to feed.
