Cabbage leaf curl virus (Begomovirus brassicajamaicaense) is a viral pathogen belonging to the genus Begomovirus. It represents a significant challenge for vegetable producers, as it causes systemic infections that severely affect the development and yield potential of host plants.
The virus primarily impacts the family Brassicaceae, including various types of cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and kale. Furthermore, the pathogen frequently persists in wild cruciferous weeds, which act as a reservoir, facilitating the spread of the virus to commercial production fields throughout the growing season.
Clinical signs of infection include severe leaf curling, inward rolling of leaf margins, interveinal chlorosis, and stunted growth. The plant architecture becomes severely distorted, resulting in the failure to produce marketable heads, which directly translates into substantial economic losses for the farming enterprise.
The transmission mechanism relies on the tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). The virus is acquired and transmitted by the insect as it feeds on the phloem sap of infected plants. Outbreaks are often correlated with warm, dry periods that favor rapid whitefly population growth and dispersal.
Management strategies require an integrated approach involving chemical control of the whitefly vector using appropriate insecticides, as well as strict sanitation practices. Prevention includes the removal of host weeds, the use of certified healthy transplants, and the implementation of resistant cultivars where available.
