Capraria leaf curl begomovirus is a plant-pathogenic virus belonging to the genus Begomovirus within the family Geminiviridae. These viruses are characterized by a circular, single-stranded DNA genome and are known for causing devastating diseases in numerous agricultural crops. The virus is primarily recognized by its ability to induce severe physiological changes in the host plant.
The host range of this virus includes various wild species, such as Capraria biflora, as well as several economically important crops. The virus interacts with the host's cellular machinery, leading to stunted growth and impaired photosynthetic capacity. Because the virus is systemic, it spreads throughout the plant vascular system, making localized treatment impossible once an infection is established.
Typical symptoms and signs of infection involve significant leaf curling, puckering, and inward or outward rolling of the leaf edges. Infected plants often display a characteristic yellow mosaic or vein clearing pattern. In many cases, the reduction in foliage size and the deformation of flowers or fruits lead to a total loss of commercial value for the crop.
