Pepper leaf curl virus

Begomovirus capsicumchinaense

Description

The causative agent of this disease is the Begomovirus capsicumchinaense, which belongs to the genus Begomovirus within the Geminiviridae family. It is a viral pathogen known for causing significant damage to horticultural crops globally through its efficient transmission mechanisms.

The primary hosts of this virus are members of the Solanaceae family, specifically the Chinese pepper (Capsicum chinense) and other Capsicum species. The virus infects the plant's vascular system, leading to systemic infection that compromises the plant's physiological integrity and development.

Typical symptoms include severe leaf curling, distortion of apical foliage, mottling, and chlorosis. Infected plants exhibit stunted growth with shortened internodes, giving them a bushy appearance, which essentially terminates fruit production and renders the plants non-productive.

The transmission of the virus is predominantly mediated by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. The insect acquires the virus while feeding on infected plant tissues and subsequently inoculates healthy plants. High temperatures and humidity levels optimize the life cycle of the vector, leading to rapid disease spread.

  • Rigorous control of whitefly populations using systematic insecticide applications.
  • Implementation of strict quarantine measures to prevent the entry of infected material.
  • Removal and proper disposal of symptomatic plants to minimize viral inoculum.
  • Use of virus-resistant or tolerant cultivars in endemic agricultural areas.
  • Weed management to eliminate alternative host plants that harbor the virus during the off-season.
