Pepper leaf curl virus, scientifically classified under Begomovirus capsicumcontorsioris, is a highly destructive viral disease affecting various vegetable crops. As a member of the Geminiviridae family, this pathogen utilizes a single-stranded DNA genome to redirect the host plant's resources, causing significant physiological stress and severe developmental abnormalities.
The primary host for this virus is the pepper plant (Capsicum annuum). Given its ability to infect multiple species within the Solanaceae family, the virus presents a persistent threat in both open-field agricultural systems and protected greenhouse environments, often leading to total crop failure if left unmanaged.
Typical symptoms of infection include severe leaf curling, wrinkling, and significant reduction in leaf size. Infected plants exhibit chlorotic patterns, stunted growth, and shortened internodes.
